Green Roof Expertise in the District

Doing what we do best.

Washington DC leads the nation in green roof installations. Stringent stormwater management regulations coupled with a dense urban environment make green roofs one of the only viable stormwater treatment approaches in many parts of the District (because other stormwater practices require at grade land which is almost non-existent on DC commercial development sites). The newly applicable 2017 DC Energy Conservation Code is now pushing for on-site energy creation on top of the requirements still in place for stormwater management.

District Green Roofs was founded because we believe that the long-term performance of a successful green roof is reliant on a coordinated design, rigorous project management, expert installation, and modest but regular maintenance which can most effectively be provided at a local level.

We see the design world pivot from sustainable design to regenerative design- it is not enough to simply be less harmful than before. Buildings must start contributing beneficially to the environment. Through our strategic relationship with Furbish, DGR expects to be installing EcoCline Solar, an innovative American-made solar racking system that uses green roof as the ballast. The solution creates a truly symbiotic relationship where each system (solar and green roof) actually benefits from the other, making a virtuous circle.  That’s the type of regenerative environment we can get behind.

Green Roof Benefits:

A green roof is a series of components, topped with vegetation, over a waterproofing system that is installed on a flat or slanted roof. Green roofs help:

  • Manage stormwater

  • Reduce the urban Heat Island Effect

  • Improve air quality

  • Improve property values and marketability, especially within cities

  • Insulate the building by decreasing heat absorption

  • Improve efficiency of mechanical equipment like HVAC and solar systems

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions

  • Extend roof life: a well-maintained green roof can more than double or triple the life expectancy for a roof membrane

  • Provide positive Biophilic impact
